Free Music from iTunes

Posted by: Jennifer In: Bookmarks

Ever since I've been buying my music from iTunes (and not Buymusic, because they suck) – I've been very happy. (I know in the past I had mentioned trying out Napster – but in the end, iTunes won out.)

In any case – if you haven't yet started using iTunes – this week is a good week to start. In honor of their Anniversary – they're giving out a new free song each day this week. And no "no-namers", either. Today's free download is a Foo Fighters song.

FYI – Another reason why I like iTunes – is the ability for garage bands to upload and sell their music. (I know someone who did this recently)

iTunes Rocks!! I love it on Mac or PC. I use it on both platforms. They recently added some new stuff to the player also. I downloaded it this morning and its awsome!

I love listening to iTunes. This is how I check out new albums now — if all the songs are good, I run out and buy the cd. :)

Unfortunately, iTunes sucks at burning CDs with any hardware except Apple's. This ordinarily wouldn't be a problem, except that the only way to burn a CD of songs you've purchased is by using iTunes.

Actually, I'm on windows XP – and have had NO problems burning CDs! You should try contacting them. My experience with their customer support has been very good so far.

(I had a major crash on my machine – and couldn't "deauthorize" it – before I had to reinstall the system. I still had the files. They "reset" my authorizations within a day.)

Unfortunatly, I have had tons of problems burning CD's with iTunes and I have WinXP too. I have quite a few audiobooks that I bought from iTMS and since I was having problems playing them on the iPod (it would get 3/4's of the way through, then decide it couldn't play the track and skip the track until it was re-uploaded to the iPod), so I tried to burn the stories to CD. Each audiobook has multiple tracks that are over 2 hours long each. I got the impression that this wouldn't be a problem and started the process. It burned the first CD just fine, but failed to continue with the next CD.

My solution has been to "re-record" the audiobooks using DBPowerAmp into more reasonalbe track sizes. Since the audio quality is low to begin with being an audiobook, it's not to much of a loss to do this. The downside is that it takes a serious amout of time.

Also, the update caused me a massive headache last night. When I first installed the new iTunes and tried to run it. It began flashing like crazy. After about 2 hours of investagation, I finally uninstalled iTunes, Quicktime and the iPod software, rebooted, then re-installed. Something in the older iPod software was causing all kinds of problems. I know this because the other installations I did worked flawlessly. None of the other installations had the iPod software installed.

Over all, I like some of the new features with iTunes… I really like that they are giving away the songs. The Party Shuffle looks like it might be a nice alternative to listening to random tracks from an existing playlist. The software seems a little more stable and the Mini mode seems to finally update properly. I would like to see some more features in the smart playlists, and I would really like a "copy playlist" feature so that I don't have to copy a smart playlist by hand.

It's nice to see that the DeDRMs people are keeping up with the changes too. It would be nice to break up the audiobooks by converting them to WAVE then editing them to smaller sizes and converting them back to MP3.

OT, but I wanted to apologize for pinging Scripty a few too many times tonight. :( I've had some minor trackback issues that have since been resolved. Sorry Jenn.

I wrote a plug-in for iTunes that lets you post your playlist an current playing song to your blog.

I'm using Brandon's plug-in to display the CD I'm listening to on my site and it works great. Well worth the $10 he asks for it.
