Opensource CMS

Posted by: adam In: Bookmarks

I stumbled across opensourceCMS via MetaFilter, earlier this evening. Although it focuses completely, as its name suggests, Open Source content management systems, it does include access to working installations of pMachine, Nucleus and b2.

The site also includes installations of a number of groupware, forums, portal (slashdot-style) CMSs, and eLearning software.

If you are comparison shopping for a CMS, this is definitely a site to visit.

What drives me absofrigginglutely batty about most CMSes available on the market is that the writers are putting timestamps in local time, and not GMT.

For example, I'm in the middle of building a set of scripts that, in the end, allows a normal end-user to create a portal site…with all the timestamps being customizable to the user's timezone.

For each CMS that does not store its timestamps in GMT, that means a different set of calculations and user-pestering to convert timestamps back to GMT and oh…unnecessary calculations and user-pestering like that does not make me happy in the least.

Then there's stuff like database design – bad database design makes for icky code and for dreams of death and mayhem for us aftermarket script writers like myself.

Stopping that rant right here before it gets right out of control. :)
