I use XAMPP (http://www.apachefriends.org) - just like MAMP, super easy install. They have installs for Linux, Mac and Windows. One thing that I wanted to do was to set up django and when I tried last summer I had heard that you couldn't use the mysql in mamp for python stuff (or maybe it was just django, it's been a few months) So I had to go through the pain, and what a pain it was.
