Drag and drop Live Journal into MT
Recently I decided to stop using Live Journal and decided to move all my writing, comments, and links to my own website. Previously, I had just linked to my journal at the LJ site, but I needed a way to convert my old LJ content to MT.
Searching on this topic, I found a PERL script that could do the trick. However, I didnt want to install perl on my server and didnt want to mess around on the web server. So I took apart the script and found out what to put in a MT import file.
From there, I enlisted the skills of my brother and we fiddled around with a way to do this transformation from XML export to MT import. I wanted a method that would work given tools anyone should have. This was cured by my brother rewriting the script as a javascript file.
Now, all you need to do is drag the XML for the month you want onto the .JS file and it will output the MT file you need.
Needless to say, I now have all my LJ content on my MT site and I can do what I want with it now. Now, I just need to work on the layout and design of the site.

For those interested in the Perl script, instructions are here. And yes, the offer still stands for me to do the conversion for you.

Wow, that was really easy to use! I needed to do this kind of thing a few years ago and I had to resort to search and replace which took forever. Thanks!

Hello, I can't seem to get the script to work. Everytime I drag the XML to the JS file, the JS file simply opens… sorry, am quite clueless to this sort of thing.

This script assumes your .js extension is set up to its windows default. Your javascript is probably set to open with another program. If you are in windows explorer, you can go to the Tools menu and choose Folder Options. From there, there is a tab for file types. If you look down the list, you can find a entry for .JS and if you highlight it and hit advanced you will see what files are associated with the .JS file type. You can edit the "Open" command or if its not there, add one called "Open" that has the following in the Command Line:
C:\Windows\System32\WScript.exe "%1" %*
(change this if you used a different install path)
If you do this, it should be set so when you drag the item on the .JS, it launches the script and converts it for you.
Hopefully, I simplified the process and made it understandable. Good luck.

Um… hi. At first I couldn't get the script to work with MT 2.64 (the body wouldn't show up, though all the other fields would import fine). However, with a few tiny tweaks it worked. I hope you don't mine me tweaking it. All I did was add a \n after the BODY: tag and remove the "" at the end of the Body Text. Here's a copy of the file I modified, with the original Readme.

And in addition to Mela's changes i want to offer to edit the script in part of date formatting, cuz now it formats the date of files for import in the way of YY, when sometimes it must bi YYYY. For example in my case i was getting imported entries dated the year 1902 instead of 2002.
I think this change will be helpful!
