Add a link development…

A few questions here. First of all - I’ve figured out how to “parse” weblogs.com. (I’m not really parsing it, and maybe that’s the problem) but it’s really, really,… really…. REALLY slow. See my sample here.

Secondly - Blogroller is developing a personal version. Do I just pack it up, call it a day. Had my fun trying to figure this stuff out, and move on? (Do I continue trying to develop this when there’s something bigger and better out there already?)

Psst, the latest news I heard about blogrolling.com is that they are looking for someone to design the personal version… maybe you could work with them??
I would much rather put something that was created especially for my own site instead of depending on another server.
I see your sample, and its really not THAT slow on this end.. is it slow for you loading or actually searching for updates? Not that it makes a difference I suppose! :) Anyhow, just thought I’d add these comments :)

I also have developed my own version - purely for me - so that it runs on *my* server and not anyone elses so i am not relying on a third partys internet to be available. When blogger fell over a week or so ago it was pretty frustrating not to be able to post. Besides, it also gives you good experience in writing code - even more when you have others using the same code they have downloaded from your website to put on theirs. I’ll probably take a look at your stuff, see how you have done it and then see how i can convert it into asp and use it on my site (or improve my version!)

Yeah, I agree. Keep developing your version. I much much prefer to have stuff running on my own site, so that I can edit the code as I want at any time and am not depedant on other servers. And the script is totally awesome so far, I would definately use it over Blogrolling any day, so please keep developing it! :)

ok - by popular demand, I’ll keep coding this. LOL!

So, while we’re on the subject… anyone know anything about parsing XML with PHP? I think if I did it correctly, it’d be faster than what I’m doing with that weblog update thingy…

I’ve been searching for a good tutorial, and I can’t find any good ones that will help me do what I want… =sigh= this is usually where I end up buying a book. (Noooo!!!! Not another php book!!!)

HEY!! WOO HOO!! Think I’ve got something… if you can’t figure it out yourself… simply steal! er… uh.. I mean do “research”. ;-) LOL! I grabbed this XML parsing script from here. MUCH faster!!!Expect a 0.6 beta release tonight or tomorrow! YAY!!!

I’m doing a search on google (which you’ve probably already done, but I’ll do it anyhow ;) )

I’m definitely not proficient in this stuff; I know basic basics, but that’s about it! BUT, that being said, I’m a pretty good researcher and maybe I’ll find something you haven’t seen that will help :)
Parsing XML with PHP using expat function
    XML parsing with PHP
Syndicate - the home of thousands of xml feeds, but also has some tutorials

I see that you just send another comment through while I was typing this, so these may be no help now, but since I put them togheter, I’m gonna go ahead and click post :)

I just wrote a blogrolling script last night Jenn, but it uses cron jobs for the recent updates and all that, but it works!

I, like some other people who have commented, love having the add a link script on my own server. I signed up for a Blogrolling account, but I don’t like it as much as something running from my very own server! So I say keep going! I’d much rather use something I can install and run myself other than relying on other servers.
