Project: Subscribe to comments (in MT): Brainstorm

Tuesday, April 30th, 2002

This is a project I’ve been meaning to get to for awhile, but I figured I’d open up a brainstorming session for it (everyone is welcome to post ideas, thoughts, things you’ve tried). Christine had “requested” a script where you could “subscribe” to comments… ie. you leave a comment on someone’s site, but you don’t want to have to keep going back to the comments section of that one post to see if anyone else replied. You’d just get an email (kind of like the one MT sends the author) that says - new comment - maybe it even HAS the comments in it…

So my original plan of attack was…

all category links

Monday, April 29th, 2002

I know that this has come up several times on the MT boards - how can I make a list of other posts in the same category on an individual entry page. Mena answered it today, and I thought I’d post a link : listing links
She has it implemented on Sew Wrong.

“On This Day” Links

Monday, April 29th, 2002

I just said yesterday that I wished I could do this. Today I find the directions to make it happen: On this day link to content from previous years for MT! [via MoveableBlog]

Amy offers instructions for how to do this in GM on her Codebits page. (Which was what prompted my comment last night.)

EDITED - Well now, don’t I feel like a dork? I have been super busy for the past 2 weeks, and for awhile there my blog reading was pretty thin. Lynda posted a solution HERE (on this site) already - detailing how to do this! I like how her method is set up, and I’ll be putting it to use later this week! Thanks Lynda!

Small Portal site using PHP

Sunday, April 28th, 2002

Amy over at domesticat.net doesn’t sit still for a moment. Her latest code creation is a method to create a portal site using PHP.

Why not use the standard RSS/XML solution? She gives you a number of reasons on her site. This is aimed towards sites using Greymatter and Moveabletype, however if you’re running a group site with people using another CMS, they should also be able to create syndicated files easily using the examples given in the zip file presented.

If you run a group site and typical syndication solutions aren’t cutting it, take a look at this code.

Custom 404 Error Message

Friday, April 26th, 2002

Not necessarily a “scripty” thing, I keep meaning to set up my very own 404 error page, and I (a) don’t know how and (b) when I have been given instructions I lose them. So the Custom 404 File Not Found Error Document Message Tutorial that I found at Brandy’s site is a helpful thing for me to have around!

Jenn … 404 errors, uh, does that have something to do with .htaccess?!? Hmmmm…

A few things here. First Below is a sample Main Index Template so you can see how all that junk is set up on the templates. (I hope it doesn’t confuse people even more! LOL!)

Also - the author of the blog software b2 had some suggestions for me on how to improve the code on this - which I have not yet implemented. But you can see his comments here.

Ok - now the template…

Multi-clipboard utility

Friday, April 26th, 2002

Great little clipboard-like utility: Pasteboard - kind of like a multi-clipboard utility, works between programs and doesn’t forget what you copied/pasted… Think I’ll give it a try! :D (link found via Out of the frying pan)

Blog surfing…

Wednesday, April 24th, 2002

Not sure if this is really in the same theme of a scriptygoddess post… but who cares. Sue me! LOL!

I was going to sign up with blogsnob here this morning - and found this link on the blogsnob site:
http://www.monsur.org/DailyBrowser/
Written in HTML and javascript, it lets you surf your daily reads easily

also, this looks pretty interesting:
http://www.bloglet.com/
emails you a daily update from your favorite sites…

Maybe both of those are old news to you… wasn’t to me…

Google Removal

Tuesday, April 23rd, 2002

I’ve been asked a few times so I’m posting this info here. I’ve removed my personal blog from search engines - but google I had to specifically go in and asked to be removed (didn’t want traffic coming in from unsavory search requests… I won’t even repeat here for fear of it coming up in google! LOL!)

There’s instructions on google’s site here on how to remove your site from their listing:
http://www.google.com/remove.html

I created the robots.txt file, AND did the urgent removal method…(which I think only works for 90 days):
